This course is designed for people who have limited experience of working with children. It will give you the opportunity to gain a basic knowledge and understanding of Childcare and Education while developing your English and communication skills, ready for Certificate and Diploma courses. The course will also help you improve your ICT and Maths skills.

COURSE CONTENT:

The course covers topics such as: children’s learning and development; the importance of play; health and safety; child behaviour problems; health and nutrition for young people.

You will also develop the ability to:

• speak and listen with confidence

• read and write to communicate at work

• apply ICT and numeracy techniques

FUTURE OPTIONS:

You may be able to go on to voluntary employment in the Early Years sector or a higher level of qualification such as:

• CACHE Level 1 Award in Caring for Children

• CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Pre-School Practice

• CACHE Level 2 Diploma in Childcare and Education

QUALIFICATIONS: (on successful completion)

OCR accreditation in Adult Literacy (Entry 3 or Level 1)

NOCN Award in Progression in Childcare (Level 1)

You will need to have an appropriate level of English (at least Entry 3), and a willingness to learn.

If you wish to do a voluntary placement you will need to complete a CRB Disclosure form and pay for the check to confirm you have no criminal convictions that could prevent you from working with children.

DAYS/TIMES: Usually two sessions of 2.5 hours per week

DURATION: 18 weeks

VENUE: Various community venues
